MBA Intern Positions or Business School Career

I wanted to write about something that is probably considered a bit out of the ordinary for some of you. This weekend I got to spend some time with a friend of mine who lives quite an extraordinary life. He makes well into the 6 figures, works his own schedule more or less, and travels all over the world, attending the most exclusive parties, and socializing with the social elite. What’s funny is that he’s just an average person, like you or me, but we spent a good deal of time talking about something that should be top of mind during your business school career, but very rarely is. That is your energy.

One of the things that is more than likely to happen this year is that, there will be a ton of talk about recession. Of course, when there is a recession everybody likes to talk about it and all the problems that come with it. As we search for MBA internships and MBA opportunities people will spend all their time talking about the recession and how there are no jobs for MBA students. In fact, people will do it in groups and those groups will become larger, and everybody wants to be part of the conversation because it is the HOT TOPIC of the moment. And of course, people will all sit around talking about how to overcome this.

MBA internships and MBA opportunities

One of the things that is more than likely to happen this year is that, there will be a ton of talk about recession. Of course, when there is a recession everybody likes to talk about it and all the problems that come with it. As we search for MBA internships and MBA opportunities people will spend all their time talking about the recession and how there are no jobs for MBA students. In fact, people will do it in groups and those groups will become larger, and everybody wants to be part of the conversation because it is the HOT TOPIC of the moment. And of course, people will all sit around talking about how to overcome this.

Well, here’s the simple answer that doesn’t make logical sense, but really is the simple truth. Don’t’ be part of the conversation. What you don’t realize is you’re magnetizing this very experience into your life because your energy is all about the recession. I can speak first hand from the search for my MBA intern position. I was doing really well and got thrown off quite a bit when I didn’t get the first job I really wanted. For about 2 weeks I put intense amounts of negativity into Pepperdine Career Services, and more. During that time I could send out the most stellar cover letter or resume and would get no responses.

When I decided to let go, and focus on the positive, a week later I got the job I have today. Then I got another offer the following week, which never even bothered, with a reference check. That offer was from Yahoo. So, my lesson for today is to keep your energy in check throughout your business school career.

NETWORKING FOR MBA INTERNSHIPS AND MBA OPPORTUNITIES

Networking has always been an important part of the business school experience. Some would even venture to say that it is the most important part of the business school experience. The rise of social networking sites such as Linkedin, Facebook, and even Myspace has completely changed networking and can play an instrumental role in your search for MBA internships and MBA opportunities. Before, you were limited to your own alumni network, but now there are no limits to what you can do. Below, I’ve included some tips on how to take advantage of these new trends in social media

1. Linkedin- this will be the most useful tool for your Business school career. More often than not, these contacts will be happy to grant your request for an informational interview. A simple search for company name will return an extensive list of results.

2. Finding Contact Information: Once you’ve found who you are looking it is quite simple to find their contact info. If you click on advanced search in Google and type in “@companyname.com” you will eventually run across somebody’s email address from that organization. What that will give you is the syntax: (eg. first.lastname@companyname.com, firstinitial.lastname@companyname.com, etc.) That should get you started.

3. Finding MBA Recruiters- Another simple tactic is to do a simple Google search for “MBA Recruiting, Company Name.” This will often let you know who the main contact is for MBA recruiting. You could also type in jobs for MBA and the company name more than likely retrieve the same results.

THE MOST EFFICIENT CONSTRUCTION COMPANY IN THE WORLD

With a title like that you must be wondering, what kind of construction company can become known as the most efficient construction company in the world. Well, somehow I seem to keep coming back to the same theme. It's the one in your head. That's right, it's known as your brain. The world around you, the life you have, your MBA opportunities, your business school career, essentially life as you've come to know it as a mental construct, created by energy and thought. Think about how fast things go from idea to inception in today's world. Think about how much has changed in just 10 years from Web 1.0 to Web 2.0. The failure of Friendster resulted in the success of Myspace and Facebook. People can micro blog and tell you every detail of their life in on Twitter. The rate at which information transfers is something that was inconceivable a few years ago. Only something as efficient as your mind can construct and conceive such rapid innovation.

So, what does that have to do with my MBA intern position, business school career success, etc? If all of it is a mental construct created by energy and thought, that means that you can ultimately control how successful or unsuccessful you are in your business school career. It all really depends on what the focus of your life is on a daily basis. In the early part of my career I worked in sales and I spent about 80% of my time fearing that I wouldn't make quota and wouldn't have a job. That thought pattern carried over into other areas of my life, and needless to say it was a self-destructive pattern. If there's anything the first year of my MBA program taught me, it was how to control my focus and be aware of self-destructive thought patterns and tendencies.

The other night I had dinner with a high school friend who is now a doctor. When I asked her about residency she described some rather stressful experiences like trying perform a surgical procedure at 3am after no sleep, where one slip could cause somebody to die and nobody was there to help. She was an extremely mild mannered person in high school, but I could tell the experienced had actually made her quite a bit tougher, in a good way. So, I guess what the point is that life, your business school career, your MBA internships, and life in general will all throw curve balls at you, and it's not what happens but how you react to what happens that will determine your success as an MBA graduate

EASING THE SEARCH FOR YOUR MBA INTERN/MBA OPPORTUNITY

With the growing popularity of Internet job sites, your search for an MBA internship or MBA career can be simplified immensely. The Internet has numerous job search sites like simplyhired.com, indeed.com, hotjobs.com and a host of others where you can post your resume and sign up for email alerts. Email alerts will allow you to be aware of every MBA internship, MBA job, or MBA career opportunity that is available on a daily, weekly or monthly basis.
Every job site has a field that allows you to fill in your e-mail address. A simple alert with the specified search terms mba intern, mba summer associate, and mba summer intern with no geographic specifications will alert you to every MBA internship position in the country. Sometimes a company may have a position listed in one location, but opportunities in your desired location may exist.
Never underestimate the power of alerts. Alerts usually help you stay up to date on new MBA interns positions that are posted on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. Knowing what MBA opportunities are available helps much more than you can ever imagine and alerts are the easiest way to ensure that this takes place.
Another thing that you need to remember is that the outsourcing boom can work for you too. If you haven’t read the 4-hour Workweek by Tim Ferriss, then pick up a copy today. For around 3 dollars an hour you can hire a virtual assistant in India to compile job listings, write cover letters, and basically manage your business school career search for you. Give your virtual assistant a task before you go to sleep and find the results in your inbox when you wake up.
